About the job

Plusnet is offering 6 students the opportunity to undertake paid work experience this summer. You will work with our teams in Sheffield to deliver real business benefit on a live project. You will receive valuable commercial experience as well as expanding your own knowledge of software engineering practices. The team will consist of 4 software engineers and 2 QA engineers.

As a Student Software / QA Engineer (3 month placement) you will...

  • Be responsible for user experience design and Front-End build
  • Contribute towards the creative design process and guiding others on UX best practice
  • Create HTML/CSS/Javascript code for integration into website applications
  • Conduct Cross-Browser and Usability testing to create accessible and compliant web pages
  • Conduct code reviews of colleagues work to maintain high quality output
  • Attend project and team meetings with business stakeholders
  • Provide mentoring and coaching to junior designers/developers
  • Help with the creation of User Stories in requirements capturing

To be able to succeed in this role, you must have the following skills and experience…

Essential Criteria for Student Software Engineer

  • Some practical experience of coding in Java
  • Some knowledge of Object Oriented Programming concepts (OOP)
  • Basic knowledge of HTML
  • Basic knowledge of REST
  • Basic knowledge of Unix or Linux

Desirable Skills for Student Software Engineer

  • Relational Database skills
  • Exposure to MVC framework (ideally ‘Spring’)
  • Some exposure to SCM tools (GIT/SVN/CVS etc)

Essential Criteria for Student QA Engineer

  • Ability to design test plans based on project requirements and to perform and document those tests with accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Anticipate defects and investigate possible causes of discovered defects.
  • Basic knowledge of Unix or Linux

Desirable Skills for Student QA Engineer

  • Basic knowledge of coding in Java for automated testing
  • Relational Database skills
